Blue and Gold Macaw are famed as one of the most popular macaws to have. As a popular pet, the Blue & Gold Macaw has been bred
domestically in the United States and other countries for well over
three decades. Most pet Blue & Golds are anywhere from 5th generation to as much as 10th generation "American" bred.
Facts about the Blue and Gold Macaw
The Ara ararauna (the Blue & Yellow Macaw), is a native of a
wide region of South America, almost the entire northern half of the
continent. They grow up primarily forest and rainforest birds in their natural setting, often
gathering in large flocks, even though they usually pair up with a mate or
buddy.
The Blue &
Gold Macaw is a decent sized bird bird for a Macaw, though not as large as Scarlet, Green-wing or
Hyacinth Macaws . It averages out to about 33 inches and spectacular plummage make it a
showstopper, indeed. A beautiful emerald crown gives way to a brilliant blue on
the top of the head and across the back and wings. Its underbelly and chest show off a gorgious vibrant yellow/gold and the primary wing
feathers shade to a deep indigo. The common macaw white facial skin
patch has three or so fine lines of black feathers running
just below the eyes, which are a beautiful and expressive light green
or grey. Below the beak is a small black bib or "beard". Only one other parrot looks
remotely like it, the Blue-throated Macaw , Ara glaucogularis,
which is much less common both in the wild and as pets. The
Blue-throated Macaw lacks the B&G's green crown, and has a blue
rather than black bib.
The Blue and Gold Macaw as a Pet
The Blue and Gold Macaw is readily available because of years of breeding. Most B&G Macaws are anywhere from 5th to as much as 10th generation captive "American" bred. Because of of this, you can easily find the Blue and Gold Macaw from breeders for as little as $950 (Here's a Blue and Gold Breeder I found at this price). The Blue and Gold Macaw, also know as the Blue and Yellow Macaw has
a reputation among Macaws for being a good talker.
While one can never be sure if their pet parrot will ever talk, the Blue and Gold Macaw is more likely to talk than other varieties of Macaw. The Blue and Gold
Macaw is lively, intelligent, affectionate and even-tempered. Be warned,
however, they are also very loud. If you want quiet in your home you
should never consider a Blue and Gold Macaw for a pet. They can also
be quite destructive if not given plenty of toys to chew. Because of this, you should have a large sturdy playstand for them to exercise and play on. They WILL destroy any toy you give them, but thats their chewfull and playful nature. Wooden toys will do you good in this case. But in spite of
their noisiness and their love of chewing the Blue and Gold Macaw makes
a wonderful pet. The Blue and Gold Macaw is very gentle and sweet. They are
highly social parrots and love being around people. And out of all the Macaws
the Blue and Gold is one of the easiest to socialize. They are adaptable
and can also be re-socialized quite easily. And because of their high intelligence
the Blue & Gold is quite good at learning new tricks and seems to
delight in doing so.
